I think we’ve all had moments in life when we were completely annoyed by the negative naysayers of the world who seem to know exactly how to get under our skin by saying things that really shouldn’t be said.

Since the day we found out we were having twins, I’ve heard it all. Many people giving us that look of pity, saying things like:

“I’m glad it’s you and not me!”

“I don’t envy you ONE bit!”

“Wow, you’ll have your hands full!” (while raising their eyebrows)

Perhaps the most ill-timed comment came as we were checking into labor and delivery and the nurse said, “I wouldn’t wish twins upon my worst enemy!”

One thing I’ve learned since becoming a parent is that people LOVE to share their opinions, whether you solicit them or not, and I can’t control what comes out of the mouths of others.

BUT, there are a few things I can control.

1. I get to decide how to receive such comments. I can remain confident in the journey that God has chosen for our family, and therefore care less about what anyone else thinks about my situation. I know the Lord has blessed us richly and chosen us to care for three kids who are just 18 months apart! That’s pretty awesome and words truly can’t express how grateful I am for that.

2. I get to decide how to respond. Oftentimes negative people expect you to be thankful to them for giving you pity, and it catches them off guard when you open up your mouth and let out a positive response. Perhaps my most favorite thing to say when we are told that we have our hands full, is “Yes, and our hearts are full too!”

3. I can choose to affirm and encourage others in the journey God has chosen for them. There are undoubtedly things that stink in life. I’m not pretending there aren’t days when I’m totally overwhelmed. But for me, it’s most helpful when I’m able to process those things with people who are closest to me instead of the random person on the street. Therefore, I like to challenge myself when I’m out and about to say things that will encourage and uplift the day of a stranger – again, most of the time it totally catches people off guard in a good way!

I decided to share this with you today because first, I want to thank you for the many times you’ve encouraged my life with positive words! I am truly blessed to have lots of positive influences in my life who consistently point me to the goodness of God. Secondly, if you are going through a time in life that seems a little overwhelming, know that God chose you specifically because HE KNEW you could handle it, and He wants to bless your life through it. Finally, let’s all remember to continue to lift up each other, and those random people we pass in the streets. We have been called to be salt and light in a dark and dim world. Your words have the power to change someone’s day and make them curious about seeking a relationship with our Heavenly Father, who LOVES them so much. And ultimately, isn’t that what this life is all about?!

Be a blessing to someone today!

Love,

Amber

The love of Christ is shining through you in this post and it is so encouraging! I can’t stand the negative attitude our culture has towards children, even Christians. Keeping a positive attitude can be hard, but people will notice.

PS I am a new follower and I really enjoy your blog!

My sister would have negative comments when she was pregnant and people found out it was #5. She had some great positive comebacks that took people by surprise.

Love this!! People do love to share their opinions, and even when they don’t mean to be, they can so oftentimes be discouraging. We’ve been given double blessings! (triple for you!) and there’s no difficult part of this journey that will even come close to overshadowing the joy that these babies will bring to our lives! 🙂

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed
the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely
off topic but I had to tell someone!
