Routine wise, our days look very similar around here, which means I tend to have the same junctions every day when I switch from one activity to the next. Most days, I don’t give them much of a second thought, and just keep plowing through the day. But yesterday I made an effort to be more intentional. As I was transitioning between each activity, I took a moment and prayed: “Lord, show me more of who You are…”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I serve Baylen breakfast.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I fold the laundry.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I get the kids dressed for the day.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I drive to the gym.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I break a sweat.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I read to and play with my kids.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I feed them.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I change the zillionth diaper of the day!”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I have a little break during their afternoon naps.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as we go to the park.”

“Lord, show me more of who You are…as I give them baths.”

Friends, that simple little prayer completely transformed my day! I saw Him! I noticed Him in the simplest of moments! It would take me forever to share all of them, so I’ll share one for now.

Every day Baylen gets more of a mind of his own. He’s discovering that there are choices. Yesterday morning I asked him if he wanted grape juice or orange juice. He passionately wanted “oooj juice.” It doesn’t really matter to me what type of juice he has. Both are fine options, so orange juice it was! He was happy, which made me happy. It reminded me of how the Lord gives us free will. Oftentimes, there are a couple great options, and He gives us the freedom to choose! And then other times, there are instances when we get what we get, and He asks us to be okay with it. Baylen is learning all about that as he eats his meals. That’s an instance where He doesn’t get to choose. He has to eat what I serve Him, and sometimes it’s very difficult for him and we battle it out for a good 20 minutes at the table until he eats what I’ve asked him to. Those moments aren’t fun for either of us, but they are absolutely crucial because he’s learning the habit of being obedient. And I’m getting a glimpse of how hard it must be on God when we don’t listen to him and try to do things our own way. Ugh, it’s painful!

There are so many parallels with parenthood and our relationship with the Lord, and God is certainly showing me more of who He is!  He loves us enough to care about our ordinary moments. Just like I care about my kids’ ordinary moments.

A verse that is becoming my mantra of sorts is this one: “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” -Zephaniah 3:17

Will you ask God to show YOU more of WHO HE IS today? Let Him surprise you!

Love,

Amber

I love that verse from Zephaniah! Your topic reminds of this quote that I have on my desk at work.

“The discovery of God lies in the daily and the ordinary, not the spectacular and the heroic. If we cannot find God in the routines of home and shop, then we will not find him at all.” Richard Foster
