If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know that I started out mom life as a stay-at-home mom. I had four kids in less than three years. They are my world. In many ways, I still consider myself a stay-at-home mom. But sometimes life has a way of surprising you. The unexpected blessing of this blog and my online fitness business have resulted in me working part-time, and I truly feel like I’ve found my sweet spot. I get to enjoy this stage of life with my kids while they’re little, and I also have an outlet to use the skills and abilities I’ve been given in a different capacity.
It’s been an incredible journey, but it hasn’t come without bumps in the road. After being a stay-at-home mom for four years, it took some time for our family to adjust to me not being available 24/7. I’ve felt all the emotions, from guilt to resentment to stress to gratitude. Within the last few months I feel like I’ve finally started to find my groove, and while I certainly don’t have it all figured out (just ask my husband), I’m excited to share a few things that have helped me to find balance.
Before I get started, I want to give a big shout out to Dell, who graciously offered to sponsor this post. They believe in supporting moms by giving them tools to get things done efficiently. In a world where mom life can get lost in the mix, I’m extremely grateful that Dell has made it a priority to create products that cater to busy families!
5 Tips For Finding Balance As A Work-At-Home Mom
1. Set official work hours. When you run an online business or really have a business of any kind, it’s tough to turn it off. There’s always something you could be doing. I’ll get an email from a client and immediately feel like I have to respond. I’ll get a text message and my phone feels like it’s screaming at me to text back ASAP. I heard a quote recently that went something like this: “Be sure you are disappointing the right people.” Wow. It’s so easy for me to say my priority is my family, but when it comes right down to it, I can easily let them play second fiddle to my work. So, I try to have specific hours every week when I get my work done and block them out. Communicating those hours to my husband and making sure we’re on the same page is important so he can hold me accountable and tell me to shut it off.
2. Turn off phone notifications. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to turn off social media notifications on my phone. There are two reasons for this. First of all, notifications were hijacking my day. I wasn’t able to stick to my “work hours.” So first and foremost, turning off notifications helps me to stay in the moment. Second of all, my clients and readers are taken care of better when I turned off notifications. Why? Because now I only check them when I have time to respond. Before, I’d see an email, then my baby would scream, and I’d forget to come back to it. I know turning off notifications feels like a big deal, but it will CHANGE your life for all the right reasons.
3. Find reliable childcare. For the longest time we didn’t have childcare. I worked early in the morning, during nap time (assuming they actually slept), sometimes after they’d go to bed and whenever else I could squeeze it in. When you’re starting up a business and don’t have much cash coming in, sometime’s that’s the only option. However, as soon as I started to make money, I reinvested it into my business in the form of child care. I was really nervous about this. In fact, it took me a few months to actually pull the trigger because I felt guilty. Should I really give up time with my kids? Is it bad that I want to work? Will I miss out on some of life’s most important moments? What I realized, though, was that when I was home and trying to take care of them and work at the same time, I was already missing out on those moments. I was distracted and stressed, always feeling half there and half somewhere else.
We hired a nanny part-time, and overnight things went smoother. I could work knowing that someone’s full attention was on my kids. When I was at work, I was at work. When I was home, I was home. My attention wasn’t split anymore, and my income more than doubled within a couple months of hiring her.
4. Revisit your “why” weekly. I chose to start working part-time because I felt something deep in my soul telling me to. I started this blog out of a desire for other moms to know that they aren’t alone. I feel most alive when I’m encouraging someone else, which is why the online personal training field was a great fit as well. However, with any job, there are always going to be those days when we question if we should be doing what we’re doing. When we hit road blocks or discouragements along the way, it’s so important to remember why we started in the first place. I make it a point to circle back to my mission and vision statements weekly so that I can truly serve my readers and fitness clients from the most sincere place in my heart. This also helps me to get rid of mom guilt because I know that what I’m doing has purpose.
5. Constantly evaluate the emotional state of your family. I feel like I can always tell whether or not I’m working too much by taking a good look at the moods of my kids and husband. When I feel balanced, they feel balanced and cared for. When I’m working too much, they feel that too, and those are often the weeks when they cry more and act out more, because we haven’t had enough time together. Those are also the weeks when Jake and I have those tough conversations about how I need to work on having more balance. Having open communication about how it’s going is key.
6. Use efficient tools to get your work done. When I was starting out, I used a half-broken computer. I spent so much time rebooting it, and waiting for it to unfreeze. I also had a phone that didn’t have enough storage so I always found myself wasting time deleting pictures so I could get my tasks done! Another trick I’ve learned to keep from being distracted is to not have all my emails go to my phone, which is why its important to have a computer I can rely on. When Dell sent me this XPS 13 laptop, I knew it was going to be the perfect fit for our family. I work from home or a coffee shop most of the time and am constantly on the go. This laptop is the smallest 13 inch laptop on the planet, so it’s super mobile. It came with an awesome case too so I can keep it protected from tiny fingers.
It’s the world’s first and only laptop with InfinityEdge display, meaning that it’s a 13 inch laptop in an 11 inch form because it uses the whole screen! The first reaction I had when I opened it was, “This screen is huge!” It also has the longest battery life of any 13 inch laptop, getting 18 hours of run time on a single charge. Another feature I really like is that it has an Intel 6th generation core i7 processor which means it’s speed is fast enough to keep up with the millions of things I’m trying to multitask. The touch screen is also a huge plus! I’ve never had a computer with a touch screen before but it comes in so handy, especially when I need to sign e-documents and such.
My husband has also been using it as he’s gearing up to start a real estate business. He’s love it as well, and we both agree that we’ll definitely be going back to Dell the next time we need another laptop.
Dell truly is excited to support moms who are busy trying to find balance. I had the best time partnering with them on this project! They are giving away a $100 Visa gift card to one lucky Mommy’s Me Time reader!
Simply visit their website for this computer here, and leave a comment below sharing which feature you think you’d appreciate the most if you owned this laptop!
I’ll choose a winner a on Thursday, January 28th! You must have a U.S. address to enter.
This is part one of a two part series to encourage working moms! You can expect the next one in February!
XOXO,
Amber

I really like that the screen is scratch proof! That is a major plus with little hands all over my electronics!
What isn’t to love about this? Battery life, speed and a photo editing software would be my main things! 🙂
Running my blog AND working as an independent contractor for a worldwide company, my biggest thing is being able to actually get my work done when I’m sitting down to get my work done! My laptop freezes every 2 minutes it seems, so the fast boot feature and core processor being so efficient and quick would save my life! And my sanity.
The aluminum casing. Between me, my husband and baby, we need lots of protection
It’s made with “green” products! How awesome is that!
love the versatility of this computer!!!!
I like the being able to touch and swipe it will help do things faster and let the kids interact more
I love how it has a long battery life! So helpful so don’t always have to have it charging!
The touch screen for sure!
My current computer is so bulky! I’d love something more portable but still full-featured.
I agree that the scratch free screen would be a plus – esp with 4 kiddos at home. I love the size too, makes it super mobile.
I love that it’s “touch friendly” and how bright and colorful the screen is! Looks awesome!
I love that it is so slim but Dell has maximized the screen space! I hate feeling like everything is squeezed onto the computer screen! Doesn’t that saying go, “great things come in small packages?”
I love the screen space! Dell does good work!
I love so many things about this laptop!! The one that stands out most to me is the gorilla glass screen! My boys always find a way to get their little hands on my electronics and often end up dropping them! I work from home as well, and your tips are really encouraging. I have noticed my “screen” time has been taking over my family life so turning off notifications would be SOO good for me!! I often feel so guilty when I hear those beeps and can’t help but check what they’re about! I’ve also been working on setting specific working hours so I can separate family time from work time. If they mesh too much it feels overwhelming! Thanks for your wonderful posts, they are always just what I need! 🙂
The long battery life would be awesome for me! My computer always dies at the most inopportune time.
I like that it is slim and easy to carry around! I also like that the screen is scratch proof! My one year old thinks it is lots of fun to beat on moms computer!
I like that it uses the whole screen and that it is scratch resistant.
Also love that the screen in scratch proof!!! And would also love the touch screen option, so much easier and more versatile!
I love the long battery life !
I really like the long battery life! Makes for easy, on the go function.
I love Dell! I love the size of this laptop, it’s perfect for a mom who has so much stuff to carry! I also love that it is small but has a huge amount of features! Who doesn’t love scratch proof screens and long lasting battery life 😉
I love the battery life on this computer! Sometimes I’m forgetful and by the time I’m halfway into a project, I realize that my battery is about to die and I’m shuffling around to find the charger. The long lasting battery means I won’t have to worry about this.
I like that it can go from Ultrabook to tablet easily and how slim and lightweight it is!
I like the touch screen option. That would come in handy!
Sounds perfect for transporting to and from work. Have never had a touch screen computer but I bet it’s a great feature!
I’m currently in the process of getting my etsy store up and running but am constantly dealing with a very slow computer. As a mom of two who works full time outside of the house I would really appreciate a faster computer. The battery life sounds amazing as well! My time is precious so it would be nice to get things done quickly!
Ps- love your blog!
I love the extra long battery life. I always feel like I’m chained to a charger, so it would be great to be able to “unplug” and not worry.
Tiny, lightweight and lasts that long on one charge? Sold.
This laptop looks amazing! I don’t have one and would love to be able work on my business in a coffee shop or take it with me when I meet with clients. It would also be great to take to my team meetings to help ladies on my team navigate their websites and social media! Pick me!! 🙂
I really love the compact size and infinity screen. As a mom who is always on the go, portability is a must!!
I love that so much of the screen is utilized so efficiently! Great for my eyes after a long day running around a toddler! It looks like the picture display is really top-notch. I’m pregnant with my second due in July (my first will be 2 next month). It’s nice to read your blog from a mom who’s been there so I know what to expect with two. You’ve already given me hope…so thank you! 🙂
I like the touch screen option. My boys like to play games and this feature would help them.
I would love the long battery life, 12 hours! Ours lasts about 1 hour right now 🙁
I love how thin it is–I work at coffee shops a lot too so I would love something easy to carry in my bag.
I love the size. it would be so easy to take here or there. making carrying it around that much easier.
Love the “gorilla glass,” and the laptop’s overall durability, perfection. It would mean less, “Please don’t touch the computer screen with your fingernails…” and more “Look here guys, isn’t this awesome?!”
Definitely the touchscreen! Especially with the work I do from home, I fill out a lot of forms so this would make it so much more efficient!
I love the extra battery life and scratch proof screen!
Love the touch screen, and that it’s scratch proof!
Being portable and that it is touch screen – WAY cool! 🙂
Lightweight !
I like the large screen.
I would appreciate so much about this laptop! The battery life, the scratch proof screen, the capability to have many applications running at once, being QUICK! I also work from home most of the time. I have two boys, 1 and 2 and another boy on the way. It would be awesome to have a reliable computer for communication, updating the website, doing our newsletter, and staying organized! I keep most things hand written still these days bc my laptop can be very unreliable!
I love the bigger screen and that it is a touch screen! I think it would be a lot easier to get things done! With four little kids in the house and me wanting to go back to school to better myself, I think it would be a great feature!
Thanks for the tips Amber! I’m looking to put my toddler in daycare starting this spring and I think it’ll really help with having set work hours. I never realized how hard it would be to find balance as a work at home, stay at home momma!
That computer looks awesome, the feature that sticks out to me the most is the touch screen 🙂
Love the long battery life! Constantly moving around in my house to find quiet space so that is huge help.
The lightweight, large screen combo is definitely my fav! I’m a mom of two boys under two years old AND a full-time college student. This laptop would serve me well with my crazy, on-the-run schedule!
I love the small, light, easily portable size
I love how thin it is. Moms have enough to carry around! Why carry more than we have to!! 🙂
I like the slim design and lightweight! Touch screen is a bonus too!
Thankful for your post! I work from home and had my second baby about 5 months ago, which has definitely rocked my planned out, work during naptime schedule! Still trying to find the balance I need to make it all “work,” but I know we’ll get there!
I love the durability of the laptop, particularly the screen. Definitely a necessity with kiddos!!
Another great post Amber! I love to get your perspective on this crazy thing we call life. 🙂
The long battery life sounds great. It would be so nice to tote around a bit smaller of a lap top and not be attached to a charger!
Ooohhh…size and portability is an absolute must for me!
I love the size of this laptop! It is the perfect mix between a computer and a tablet. It would fit perfect in my oversized purse I carry every day. I have been in desperate need of a new computer but I have yet to bite the bullet to purchase one. Dell is THE best!
A touch screen would be amazing!
I love the InfinityEdge screen! I do a ton of computer work, and it would be great to have not such a huge laptop but one with a huge screen! The touchscreen is also an awesome feature, as I sign many things and often need to print, then sign, then scan it back in.
I love that it should be durable enough to withstand my family and kids, but able to process fast enough to keep up with everything I need to do with it.
The touchscreen and super fast processor for lots of multitasking!
Touch screen for sure!
The touch screen capability would be great!
I think the large screen and touch screen would be the best features I like! Plus it is light weigh, which would work great for moving it from place to place. I do this a lot when I edit photo’s for clients. It is easiest to find the quietest place in the house :).
I love that it’s a laptop and has a touchscreen. It seems that with multitasking, being able to touch the screen is a faster option!
I’d appreciate most the graceful thin-ness! When you’re relaxing on the couch or getting work done, you don’t want something bulky to hold up. Thanks!!
Gorilla Glass. With all the little fingers they tend to tough the screen. Id be happy with that for sure. Thanks for the chance. I love reading all your posts!!!
The touch screen! Great for working quickly on projects. Thanks Amber, love these tips!
I love that is is scratch proof with my kids and me always bei.g do clumsy lol
The fact that it is lightweight and has a long battery are two features that I would enjoy.
This would be the perfect laptop to help me keep my business going. Would love to have a laptop that isn’t too big or too small (love the screen) so I can be anywhere while working and not stuck at a desktop!
I love the size! Perfect for on the go!
The long battery life and wide screen in a small computer bare great!
*are
I love that it is lightweight, thin, large touchscreen and affordable!
I’m actually impressed with the price point! For what you pay you receive a ton of useful features rather than a lot of fluff!
The backlit keyboard, and large screen but a more compact body would be so nice! I currently have a 17″ computer for screen size to see spreadsheets, or put pdfs side by side for my work from home. My laptop is BIG and HEAVY. I love Dell products and will absolutely be looking at this for our purchase this fiscal year.
I love the portability, so perfect for on the go! And the charge – 18 HOURS!!!! Sounds amazing, because remembering to plug it in amongst taking care of 2 littles ones, is not a skill of mine!
I would absolutely love the speed and convenience of this lap top! It makes me excited just reading how wonderful it is! Haha! I’m a full-time working mom as well as a full time online college student… I made the decision to swap from HP to Dell about 6 months ago and have not been impressed with my Dell 🙁 It has not been helpful in juggling these two things. I’ve always seen such great reviews of Dell… I think I must have just gotten the wrong one! It’s quite big and may not have as fast of a processor as this one. Anyway, I absolutely LOVE reading your blogs!! You’ve helped me find ways to juggle so many things with your blogs! Thank you!!
I love this post. So timely- especially the part about hiring a nanny. Been putting that off but it’s time!
Love the tiny-ness of the computer! So key!
I would love the 18 hour battery life for all the times I forget to plug in the charger! As well as the backlit keyboard!
I love the touch screen and scratch proof! My first grader and kindergartner have homework on the computer and these features would be awesome!!
I have an online business and my computer is just like your blog described, I spend more time waiting and rebooting it than I can getting work done. My phone is also reached its max on storage so I can’t do anything on it. I love that the XP 13 has 5.7 million megapixels for a beautiful picture and also that it’s scratch resistant, with 2 little ones that a major plus!
I would love this laptop because of its processing speed! Being efficient is so important to maximizing work output to balance home/work life. I like to get things done! The touch screen seems like an awesome feature too.
I needed this post. Thank you! I love the screen and battery life of the laptop!! Would be such a blessing.
The size! Portable and able to fit into a large purse/work bag is key.
Touch screen would be awesome!
Touch screen!
Ooh, touch screen! That is so fancy! Clearly my current laptop is 10 years old, and I’m in desperate need of an upgrade! Mostly, like you said, it would be fantastic not to spend half of my “computer time” booting the darn thing up and then inevitably restarting when it glitches out!
I love how portable this laptop would be. I am also a work at home Mom and love all aspects of this article! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this blog. I just found you on Facebook and am really enjoying your writing. I’m also a work at home mom and it has been a constant struggle to find the balance with my 2 kids, hubby and work life. I’m going to try setting specific hours and maybe a part time nanny, that would help a lot! I love the laptop you use! I think the best part is the long lasting battery because I hate being tethered by a cord and the huge screen because I have to look at multiple images at once to be most efficient at my job.
I love the fact that it is slim enough to slip into your purse or diaper bag! I have recently began working at home part time, with two little ones for KA and cannot believe how much better I feel balancing my passion with motherhood!
These tips are spot-on! I’ve been a part-time working-from-home mom for 10 years, and I can attest to the effectiveness of following these guidelines. There have been times of smooth sailing, and there have been times when I was desperate to quit my job. Looking back, I can attest that when times were bad it was always true that I was violating one or more of these rules. On the other hand, the times when my work and my family are in proper balance and functioning well have always been during seasons in which I am abiding by all of these guidelines. Thank you for this wonderful post!
I am currently in the market for a laptop, and I am especially eager to get an upgrade from the slow laptop I use today. Time is a valuable commodity for me as a mom, and it frustrates me to no end when my time is wasted by an inefficient computer. So, I’m especially interested in the processing capabilities of the XPS 13 laptop and will be looking into it as a possible replacement for my current model.
I love that it’s so slim and lightweight! I don’t need any extra weight to carry around since I’ve always got my hands full. I’ve also been wanting a touchscreen laptop because it’s so much more convenient to use at most all times!
I love that the screen is so large, but its still very slim! Also the longer battery life is definitely a huge plus! The touch screen is very cool too!
I love the battery life! My phone is always dying, which is so frustrating! I’ve recently started an online business, this computer would be perfect.
The size is such a HUGE factor for me. Too small it becomes hard to function, too big it becomes hard to transport. When your office can be anywhere in the world, this is so very important.
As a mom of three small kiddo’s and a full time second grade teacher, I could really use this! The size and durability is very enticing! Thanks for the post!
I would love the processor, which would be a big step up from the laptop we are currently getting by with! Ours can’t even hold a charge anymore – so I would also probably love the long battery life! 🙂
I love that it is super portable but yet has a i7 processor!! Wow!!
That gorilla glass is pretty slick- sounds incredibly durable for little hands and toys that may go a flying 🙂 I’m a fellow work-from-home Mama to a 9 month old and these tips are SO right on. Thanks for sharing!
