Numbering Our Days

A few weeks ago I mentioned that we were in the middle of a sermon series at church called “Losing Our Buts” which focuses on eliminating excuses in our lives so we can live life to the fullest. Yesterday we finished up the series, and the message was incredibly motivating.

The title of the message was “But I Don’t Have Time” and basically focused on how important it is to remember that our days on earth are numbered. The point of knowing that our time on earth is short isn’t so we can maximize our own experiences. It’s to live now with an eternal purpose and focus.

A quote from yesterday that has been resounding in my soul ever since is this: “Say no to the good things so you can say yes to God’s things.” As an American stay-at-home mom, there are times when I feel pressure to “do more” than “just stay at home.” Perhaps I should volunteer there, or socialize more. Most of the time I put this pressure on myself, likely because our culture is a busy one that encourages us to fill up our schedules, and that somehow if it is filled with “good things” like serving and giving of our time, then the busier the better!

Yesterday I was reminded of Nehemiah 6:3 which says, “I replied by sending this message to them, “I am doing a great work!  I cannot stop to come down and meet with you.” Nehemiah is trying to rebuild the city, but others are trying to distract him with “good things.” But that’s not what God wants him to be doing, so he stays focused on what God is calling him to do.

You probably know where I’m going with this. It is so important for each of us to be in tune with the Lord, seeking him daily so that we are able to stay focused on what HE wants us to do without the distractions of other things stealing our time away. When we are in close relationship with God, we are able to easily discern what activities He wants us to do, and which ones we need to pass up, no matter how “good” they are.

For me, I know that at this point in my life, God is calling me to be a stay-at-home mommy. He’s calling me to spend my days with my precious son, investing in his life as he grows into a little boy. I know that he’s preparing me to do the same for my little girls. The days can be long sometimes, but the months and years go quickly. I want to soak up each little snuggle, smile, and temper tantrum. I am doing a great work right here. When my day job is finished and Baylen goes to bed at night, God is calling me to love on my husband and invest into our marriage. Of course I need and want to do a few other things outside of this and will listen to the Holy Spirit when those other things are presented, but my top priority is my family. The rest of the opportunities get my leftovers.

How about you? What is God calling you to do at this point in your life? Whatever it is, do it tenaciously, and know that it is enough. Number your days so that you are living with an eternal purpose, and walk confidently while doing it. Ask yourself these questions: What needs to go from my schedule? What needs to be added?

Remember that you were made for God’s purposes, and no matter who are you, He has a special role just for you.
