I’m often asked what our days look like around here. Well, that’s a great question. We’ve been adding new members to our family for the past three years, and I feel like it ebbs and flows with each season we’re in. Sometimes we’re in survival mode, and other times it feels like there’s a rhythm to our chaos. It seems like just when I have things sort of figured out, we welcome a new baby and things go fruit basket upset again.

Before I share our schedule, let me share a little bit about the method behind our madness.

One thing I’ve learned along the way is that my kids THRIVE on having some sort of structure. It doesn’t have to be super rigid, but having a loose framework helps us all to know what to expect, and keeps us all happy. When I’m a step ahead of them, and know what we’ll do next, it prevents boredom, which then eliminates a lot of the shenanigans they tend to pull when they’re bored.

Oftentimes, when a day is out of control it’s because I haven’t put the time in to plan ahead, or prepare activities for us to do. Those are the days when Jake walks in the door and I say, “The kids totally dominated me today.” And then I ask him to open a bottle of wine.

Another thing I’ve learned is that sleep is KING. Well-rested kids are happy kids. I’ve always made it a top priority to be home for nap time and bed time. We are the people who are at home at 1:00pm for nap time EVERY DAY, and home by 7pm EVERY NIGHT. If we go out later than that, we get a babysitter. When my kids get a full night’s rest, the next day is bound to be happier.

Obviously there are exceptions when we push their limits a little bit, but when you have so many kids, the ship can sink VERY FAST. And when it does, it isn’t fun. All that to say, we celebrate early bedtimes. Plus, it gives Jake and I the chance to get some good quality time in every night.

Okay, so here’s our current schedule:

7:00am: Kids wake up! I set the older three up with milk, dry Cheerios, and Doc McStuffins on the couch while I feed the baby and make breakfast.

7:30am: Breakfast! We do A LOT of eggs and frozen waffles with pb and jelly around here. It isn’t unusual to go through 50 eggs a week! I try to read them a little kids devotional to start the day. Some days they’re into it, some days they aren’t. Oftentimes I think it does more for me, getting me in a solid mindset to take on the day.

8:15 – 9:00am: Free play, clean up breakfast, get kids dressed and brush teeth.

9:00am: Feed baby and go to the gym! If I could buy one thing for every mom in the world it would be a gym membership with childcare. Seriously, it is my sanity. It is so worth the work it takes to get them all loaded up and in the car. I drop the kids off, listen to a sermon while I run, AND I get to shower ALONE. It’s a mind, body, and soul experience, people. Plus the kids just love it. We always say it is some of the best money we spend every month. If you have the ability to join a gym, DO IT!!!

Now obviously we don’t go to the gym everyday. If we did, I wouldn’t still have 10 pounds of baby weight to lose. Or maybe that has something to do with all the sugar I crave while breastfeeding. Anyway, on the days we don’t go to the gym, we do playdates, run errands, or something else to get out of the house. I’ve learned that in order to not go insane as a stay at home mom, I NEED to get out of the house once a day.

11:00am: Feed baby, play with toys, and read books. I don’t do anything to prepare for this. I just try to be intentional about playing WITH them, instead of letting them play on their own.

Noon: Lunch. We like to sing songs during lunch time. This is the time of day when they all start to get tired and like to get on each other’s nerves, so singing songs or having Pandora on in the background seems to help.

12:30pm: Free play, clean up lunch, throw in laundry, pick up toys, change diapers

1:00pm: Bring all the kids up to mom and dad’s room. I turn on Netflix and let the older three watch a show while I feed Case. Then I put Case down for a nap. Then I put the other three down for their naps.

2:30pm: Baylen wakes up. I try to be intentional about spending a few minutes doing what HE wants to do. Sometimes it’s to cuddle and watch Thomas. Sometimes it’s to play airplanes. Sometimes it’s play dough. He gets to choose.

3:00pm: Girls wake up. Everybody gets a snack.

3:30pm: School! I try to spend some time on Sunday nights to plan learning activities. I get most of my ideas from Pinterest. In the afternoons we work on colors, ABCs, numbers, art projects, ect. Their attention spans aren’t super long, so this only lasts for 30 minutes – 1 hour tops, so I just go with whatever they seem up for.

4:30pm: My kids LOVE to color. So we usually do that after school. Or we’ll go downstairs and play in the bouncy house. We bought a Little Tikes bouncy house this year, and it has been a life saver for the colder months. It takes up half our basement when it’s inflated, but it is totally worth it when we can’t get outside.

5:00pm: Prep dinner while the kids play. Or order take-out if it’s too crazy, which I’ll admit is fairly often. Again, playing music during this time is KEY. Everybody gets super crabby and antsy this time of day. Sometimes I’ll just take out the pots and pans and let them go to town. Or let them splash in water. Or we’ll just dance. Or go to Target. Whatever it takes to keep them happy until dad walks in the door. Because we all know when Dad gets home it’s like hitting the reset button.

6:00pm: Eat dinner. No toys or phones allowed. If Jake and I feel like we need a meal where we can just focus on each other and want to eat in peace, we’ll feed the kids and wait to eat until after they’re in bed. We do at home date nights at least once a week, and I look SO forward to it.

6:30pm: Bath time. (Want to relax your kids before bed time? Add a little epsom salt, baking soda, coconut oil, and lavender oil. My kids LOVE that.)

7:00pm: Bedtime for the younger three.

7:30 or 8:00pm: Bedtime for Baylen.

8:00pm: MOM & DAD TIME!

So that’s our life right now. A little structure goes a LONG way. It isn’t anything fancy, but it works for us and keeps me from going crazy.

To those of you who are in the thick of survival mode wishing you had a little more structure, hang in there. It will come. Give yourself some grace and embrace the chaos. You’ll get where you want to be soon!

XOXO,

Amber

I love your routine! I am super impressed! That doesn’t sound easy with 4 kids so young – you truly are super-mom! I love how intentional you are about playing WITH them – it is so tempting for me to use time when my kids are playing well to get chores done, but it is such a good reminder to cherish that time with them 🙂 Way to go using your afternoons productively!!!

Hi! I’m a mom of an older singleton and twins, and thinking about having a fourth. My family thrives on structure as well. My question is, does your baby nap in the morning, or does he kind of go with the flow while you are out and about??

I love seeing your day and how you do it with four. I just brought home baby #4 about a week ago and I am so craving some sort of schedule. It feels like our newest little one has been with us forever and I keep forgetting that she’s only two weeks old and that there can’t be any structure right now. I’ve also started homeschooling our oldest this year (5 year old) and so we’ve had a real schedule to our day until the baby came. I can’t wait to reach the stage where I actually get to sleep at night and can expect a schedule during the day.

You truly are a super mom!!!! I loved reading about your day 😀 I’m hoping to be just like you in a few years (minus like 3 kids), running my blog at the same time. Keep doing what you’re doing! You even inspire us non-mommies 😀

But when do you blog and do social media?? That’s honestly what I was wondering the most about when I opened this haha

I was wondering the same! 🙂

Amber, I am so blessed I found your blog and pages. Your advice is so amazing and helpful so thank you for that. I do have a question however. What do you do with your daily routine when company comes and stays at your house??

I agree 110% about kids thriving on routine & getting sleep. We are always home too for naps & bedtime. The days we push it is so hard on everyone. Thanks for sharing!

Great routine, ours is pretty similar even though I only have one daughter! She loves being active and doing activities so I have to think forward too! x

Our routine is super similar…..including the gym. I even put my son in the preschool program at the gym so then I could put my girls in the day care and get in a workout. It is so much easier than trying to drag everyone in and out. I love the school time in the afternoon, and am going to try that with my crew. You are doing a great job thanks for sharing.

I only have one child at the moment and we have a really great routine for the day. Our routine is similar to yours, and I am impressed that with 4 kiddos you still are able to manage their day so successfully. Just thinking about adding in a newborn to the mix (within the next year or so) makes me feel panicked that the structure will dissolve. Thanks for giving me hope that you can keep it going, even as you add to it!

I completely agree with you in that kids crave & need a schedule. I have 2 of my own (11 months apart–feels like twins a lot of the time) & watch 2 others 3 days a week–4 kids, 4yo & under. It gets loud, but loudness isn’t always bad. 🙂 You really are amazing & I love following your adventures on social media. Happy 2015!

I love this post! I just had my third and we’re definitely in survival mode. Way too much TV and crazy children. All my kids are three and under and it’s a little chaotic. You’ve really encouraged me to put them on more of a schedule to help out!

Thanks for sharing your schedule! I have four boys all 2 years a part, give or take a few months. The one challenge no one gave me a heads up on was how busy my schedule would be as the boys aged. My boys are still young, but man are we as busy as ever! Multiple sports practices a week, team games, school, the day to day grind….it is a crazy ride but I love it! Amazing you are able to mange a blog with 4 babies 🙂 Oh and I totally agree with you on the gym membership.

I just read a post (via Facebook) that linked to your blog and saw this post. It is always helpful to see how other moms with a bunch of young kids structure their day (either with the kids at home, working outside the home, or whatever combo of both). I’ve got a 4-year-old and twins who are 2. I never fully appreciated the importance of structure until I had kids (especially the twins) – it means survival! Thanks for your posts – love your positive attitude and encouragement for all moms!

I loved reading this- it makes me smile to see how similar other moms days are to mine- down to the singing at lunch and occasional separate dinner for me and my husband! I have two kids- 18 months and 3 months- and I feel like our rhythm is coming back for the first time since our son was born. Still trying to work in daily exercise (much harder in the winter) and a minute of quiet and prayer… I would love to do an early rising thing, but haven’t had the strength for that yet! Anyways, I enjoyed this and your post to the mom of a baby and toddler!

I am SO looking into a gym with childcare. That’s brilliant and would take care of my needs and my only child’s socialization needs at the same time. Wonderful!

  19. avatar

God definitely knew what he was doing when he gave four kids in three years to you! I really wish i could get my younger kids on a good sleep schedule. I am sure they would be much happier, but it just isn’t in the cards for kids with big kid and teen age siblings. If there was a gym with childcare in my town I would love it!

I think this routine sound great I have three girls ages 4,years 2,years 2 months
And I’m wondering when you fit in house work?

    1. avatar
      MommysMeTime says:

Hi Krysta! I try to pick up toys here and there, and then my husband and I do a thorough pick up and sweep and clean and make sure everything’s decent before we head to bed. And I actually hired a house keeper to come every other week to do the deep down cleaning. Best money I’ve ever spent! 🙂

I’m so glad I found your blog as I need encouragement. I have a 3 month old and a 4 year old. The baby is such a tough napper. It’s all I do all day. I can’t get out of the house because she will get overtired. She won’t sleep in the car or stroller. I can’t put her down. I’ve read all the books as I went through this with my first. Any advice?

I found your site while I was looking for how to structure my day. My situation is a bit different though. I’ll be leaving my full time job in 2 weeks to stay home with my mother in law who is 86, has some dementia and is mostly blind. I liken it to having a 4 or 6 year old in the house – she still has a voice in most of her day to day and is still stubborn but needs help with meal prep and needs the companionship. The structure and the interaction you talk about about will be key for her and for me. This post is inspiring! I love the tip about at home date nights for you and your mister too! Thank you so much!

I just came across this post as I was looking through your site. Right now I work from home with both an 18 month old and a 4 year old. I have struggled with establishing a good routine for everyone. There is too much TV and I never feel fully focused on any one thing resulting in one overwhelmed mama.. Your post was very encouraging – I really want to get us on a better routine for them and for my sanity. I love the gym idea. We recently joined our local YMCA which offers 2 hours of child care while you work out. I have been thinking about taking more advantage of it during the week. I could work out for an hour and utilize their free WiFi to maybe get a little uninterrupted work done during the second hour. The kiddos get the benefit of playing with other little ones for a while which helps with the part I feel I have really failed in since beginning this journey – keeping them social. I also like the small doses of school stuff in the afternoon. I really want to incorporate more learning activities into our day, but at the same time I don’t want to make a full day of it so that it becomes drudgery. I also love the idea of the home date night! Thank you!
